[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Jeong Eui-yong, Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is visiting New York to attend the 76th United Nations General Assembly, held talks with Sameh Shoukry, Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, on the 23rd (local time) and exchanged wide-ranging views on bilateral relations, practical cooperation, and the situation on the Korean Peninsula.
The two ministers evaluated that high-level exchanges and communication between the two countries have continued despite COVID-19, and agreed to continue expanding high-level exchanges, including at the presidential level, in the future.
They also agreed on the need to pursue a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) and shared the view that it is necessary to promptly conclude a "Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on a Joint Feasibility Study for the Korea-Egypt FTA" as a preliminary step to formally start FTA negotiations.
Minister Jeong requested special attention to Korean companies operating locally and asked for cooperation to ensure that Egypt's infrastructure improvement projects, including transportation, in which Korean companies are participating, proceed smoothly.
