[Asia Economy reporters Seo So-jeong and Lee Chun-hee] The COVID-19 vaccination plan for the 4th quarter, which includes vaccination plans for pregnant women and children and adolescents, will be announced on the 27th.
The COVID-19 Vaccination Response Promotion Team announced on the 23rd that it will announce the "COVID-19 Vaccination 4th Quarter Implementation Plan" on the afternoon of the 27th. This 4th quarter plan is expected to include vaccination plans for pregnant women and children and adolescents, as well as information on additional vaccinations (booster shots) and vaccination plans for the unvaccinated.
Previously, health authorities stated that they would consider allowing COVID-19 vaccination for pregnant women and children and adolescents aged 12 to 17, who had been excluded from COVID-19 vaccination so far. In February and March, at the early stage of COVID-19 vaccination, they also disclosed plans to promote booster shots for vulnerable groups such as residents of nursing hospitals and facilities who were vaccinated early, and immunocompromised individuals.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on the 22nd (local time) granted emergency use authorization for a single Pfizer vaccine booster shot for seniors aged 65 and older or high-risk groups regardless of age. Initially, the U.S. government had planned to administer booster shots to all adults aged 18 and over, but the target group was significantly reduced after FDA experts raised objections.
Meanwhile, the number of new first-dose vaccinations on the previous day was 27,400, bringing the total number of people who have received the first dose to 36,570,105. The vaccination rate for the first dose relative to the population is 71.2%. On the same day, 15,791 people completed their vaccination, bringing the total number of fully vaccinated people to 22,204,741, with a vaccination completion rate of 43.2% relative to the population.
The number of new domestic COVID-19 confirmed cases as of midnight that day was 1,716. Of these, 1,698 were domestic cases and 18 were imported. By region, Seoul reported 640 cases, Gyeonggi 544, and Incheon 108, with the metropolitan area totaling 1,292 cases, accounting for 76.1%. The proportion of confirmed cases occurring in the metropolitan area has remained in the 70% range for consecutive days, indicating that the outbreak is not subsiding.
