[Asia Economy Reporter Kum Bo-ryeong] Kim Ki-hyun, the floor leader of the People Power Party, officially requested the introduction of a special prosecutor and a parliamentary audit to the Democratic Party of Korea regarding Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung's so-called 'Daejang-dong scandal.'
On the 22nd, Kim held an emergency press conference at the National Assembly and said, "We demand that the Democratic Party of Korea conduct a special prosecutor investigation and a parliamentary audit regarding the preferential development allegations in Seongnam City's Daejang-dong." He emphasized, "Governor Lee also stated that he did not receive a single won and fully agrees with the investigation. Former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon described it as an unprecedented get-rich-quick case raising national suspicions, so there should be no reason for the Democratic Party not to promptly agree to the special prosecutor and parliamentary audit."
Kim continued, "If the Democratic Party refuses this, it would be tantamount to Governor Lee admitting that there is a major corruption allegation he wants to hide, and former leader Lee Nak-yeon would be admitting to being an accomplice protecting that corruption allegation. Such criticism would be unavoidable."
Along with this, Kim announced plans to file complaints against Governor Lee, Yoo Dong-gyu, the former acting president of Seongnam Urban Development Corporation, and Kim Man-bae, known as the major shareholder of Hwacheon Daeyu. He said, "These three are suspected to be the parties involved or the devilish planners behind the unprecedented investment structure involving Hwacheon Daeyu, Cheonhwa Dongin, and Seongnam Utddeul, which turned a 350 million won investment into 400 billion won, an enormous profit exceeding 110,000%."
He demanded sincere cooperation from related institutions. Kim said, "Governor Lee should not just say he fully agrees with the investigation in words but should first actively cooperate by submitting relevant materials. The more all materials are kept secret as they are now, the deeper the suspicions will become. The one who hides is the culprit."
Regarding the Lee camp's opposition to the special prosecutor and parliamentary audit related to Daejang-dong expressed earlier that morning, Kim said, "Governor Lee is superficially saying he will undergo investigation, but secretly he is using a shallow scheme to endure and get through this presidential election." He added, "If there is not a single suspicion about Governor Lee, his acquaintances and close aides should become key witnesses and openly reveal the truth to the public. Members of the Lee camp should actively step forward and ensure the Democratic Party cooperates with the parliamentary audit and special prosecutor."
