[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Jo] On Chuseok day, the 21st, over 6,500 people completed their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in a single day. The cumulative number of first-dose vaccinations in the country has expanded to 71.2% of the total population. The daily new confirmed cases remain in the early 1,700s, marking 78 consecutive days of four-digit figures.
According to the COVID-19 Vaccination Response Task Force on the 22nd, 6,525 people received their first dose and 4,130 completed their vaccination the previous day. Many entrusted medical institutions and vaccination centers were closed during the Chuseok holiday period, resulting in a significant decrease compared to weekdays just before the holiday. The number of new first-dose vaccinations by vaccine type was 3,742 for Moderna, 2,779 for Pfizer, and 4 for Janssen. There were no new first-dose vaccinations for AstraZeneca (AZ).
As of midnight that day, the cumulative number of first-dose vaccinations in the country was 36,542,609, corresponding to 71.2% of the total population. The first-dose vaccination rate among those aged 18 and over is 82.8%. The cumulative number of Janssen vaccine recipients is 1,415,418. People who received the Janssen vaccine, which requires only one dose, are counted in both the first and second dose statistics.
Looking at the completed vaccinations by vaccine type from the previous day, 3,501 were Pfizer and 625 were Moderna. The total number of AstraZeneca completed vaccinations was 125. These individuals are understood to have received AstraZeneca for their first dose and Pfizer for their second dose as a heterologous vaccination.
Accordingly, the cumulative number of people who completed vaccination by the previous day was 22,188,840. This corresponds to 43.2% of the population and 50.2% of those aged 18 and over. The cumulative completed vaccinations by vaccine type are 10,319,881 for AstraZeneca (including 1,586,116 heterologous vaccinations), 9,441,593 for Pfizer, and 1,011,948 for Moderna. The remainder are Janssen recipients.
Reports of adverse reactions after vaccination continue steadily. There were 2,392 new reports suspected to be adverse reactions after COVID-19 vaccination. By vaccine type, new reports were 1,487 for Pfizer, 781 for Moderna, 102 for AstraZeneca, and 22 for Janssen. One additional death report was added on the 20th for a Pfizer vaccine recipient.
There were 4 new suspected reports of anaphylaxis, a severe systemic allergic reaction. Among these, one case each was reported for Pfizer, AstraZeneca, and Moderna.
There were 24 new reports of 'special interest adverse reactions,' which include cases requiring intensive care unit admission, life-threatening conditions, permanent disability, and sequelae. The remaining 2,363 cases were classified as general adverse reactions, such as muscle pain, headache, fever, and chills.
Since vaccinations began in the country on February 26, the cumulative number of suspected adverse reaction reports has reached 246,430. Common post-vaccination symptoms such as muscle pain, headache, fever, chills, and nausea account for 236,442 cases (95.9%). There have been 1,123 suspected anaphylaxis cases, 8,212 major adverse reaction cases including neurological symptoms, and 653 death cases.
As of midnight that day, the cumulative death reports by vaccine type are 342 for Pfizer, 285 for AstraZeneca, 15 for Moderna, and 11 for Janssen.
Including cases initially reported with other symptoms but later worsened to severe conditions resulting in death (276 cases), the total number of deaths is 929.
Meanwhile, the spread of COVID-19 continues recently, centered around the metropolitan area. The Central Disease Control Headquarters announced that as of midnight on the 22nd, 1,703 new domestic confirmed cases and 17 imported cases were confirmed. Although slightly decreased from the previous day, the number remains in the 1,700s for two consecutive days.
The daily number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country has remained in four digits for 78 consecutive days since July 7. The total cumulative confirmed cases reached 290,983 (including 14,239 imported cases). There is particular concern about a nationwide resurgence due to large-scale population movement following the Chuseok holiday.
