According to data received on the 22nd from virtual currency exchanges by Kang Min-guk, a member of the National Assembly's Political Affairs Committee from the People Power Party, the total investor deposits at exchanges certified with the Information Security Management System (ISMS) as of the end of August this year amounted to 61.7311 trillion won (including coin deposits).
Among these, the deposits of the four major exchanges with real-name accounts?Upbit, Bithumb, Coinone, and Korbit?totaled 59.3815 trillion won (96.2%). This is the first time that the individual deposit sizes of ISMS-certified exchanges, including the four major exchanges, have been disclosed.
Among the four major exchanges, Upbit's share is particularly overwhelming. As of the end of August, Upbit's investor deposits amounted to 42.9764 trillion won. Of this, 5.8313 trillion won were Korean won deposits, and 37.145 trillion won were coin deposits. Upbit's deposits account for 69.6% of the total deposits of all exchanges included in the survey.
Bithumb, which has the second-largest trading volume in Korea, had customer deposits totaling 11.6245 trillion won. Korean won deposits were 1.44 trillion won, and coin deposits were 10.1844 trillion won. The investor deposits of Coinone (3.6213 trillion won) and Korbit (1.1592 trillion won) were less than 5 trillion won combined.
Upbit also dominated other exchanges in terms of membership numbers. As of the end of August, Upbit had 8,298,882 registered users. Considering that those under 19 years old cannot register, a significant portion of the adult population holds accounts with Upbit. Bithumb followed with 3,106,385 registered users. Coinone (995,681 users) and Korbit (175,364 users) had fewer than one million registered users each.
