[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in expressed his gratitude to UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres for his continued support for peace on the Korean Peninsula.


On the 20th (local time), President Moon met with Secretary-General Guterres in the 27th-floor conference room of the UN Secretariat and stated, "I thank the Secretary-General for your continuous support for peace on the Korean Peninsula, and I am grateful for your active support in making the Pyeongchang Olympics an opportunity to improve inter-Korean relations."


Secretary-General Guterres said, "Thank you and congratulations for successfully completing this morning's SDG Moment with BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan)."


President Moon also said, "Congratulations to the Secretary-General on the successful hosting of the SDG Moment, and thank you for allowing BTS and me to play a role."


Secretary-General Guterres evaluated that "Korea and the UN maintain an exemplary cooperative relationship," adding, "Korea contributes greatly to the UN in all areas including peace and security, sustainable development, human rights, and climate change response."


He further added, "I fully express solidarity regarding peace on the Korean Peninsula."


President Moon congratulated Secretary-General Guterres on his reappointment and said, "I hope you remember that I am the first Korean president to attend the UN General Assembly for five consecutive years during your term."


President Moon said, "This year marks the meaningful 30th anniversary of the simultaneous admission of South and North Korea to the UN," and Secretary-General Guterres responded, "The 30th anniversary of simultaneous UN admission will be an important milestone for the future and peace of the Korean Peninsula."


President Moon concluded the meeting by saying, "Korea will continue to contribute responsibly as a member concerned with sustainable development and climate change response, areas of interest to the Secretary-General."
