[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] President Moon Jae-in, who is visiting the United States to attend the United Nations General Assembly, held a meeting with UN Secretary-General Ant?nio Guterres on the 20th (local time) to discuss the Korean Peninsula issue and international affairs.


President Moon expressed his gratitude to Secretary-General Guterres for consistently supporting the South Korean government's efforts toward denuclearization and peacebuilding on the Korean Peninsula, and requested the UN's continued cooperation and support.


He also appreciated Secretary-General Guterres' support in enabling BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan) to participate in the SDG Moment during this UN General Assembly and praised the UN's leadership in addressing global issues.


In particular, he announced that South Korea will host the UN Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting in December, contributing to strengthening 'Peacekeeping Operations (PKO),' one of the Secretary-General's key agendas, and explained that South Korea will play an active role in solving global issues.


Secretary-General Guterres expressed hope that this year, marking the 30th anniversary of the simultaneous UN membership of South and North Korea, will serve as an opportunity to improve inter-Korean relations, and he evaluated President Moon's efforts and South Korea's global leadership in climate change response and peacekeeping activities.


The Blue House stated, "This meeting was the sixth between President Moon and Secretary-General Guterres," adding, "It reaffirmed the Secretary-General's support for peacebuilding and complete denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula and served as an opportunity to further strengthen the cooperation between South Korea and the UN."
