SDG Moment Opening Session... BTS "Special Envoys of the President of the Republic of Korea, Here to Share the Future Generation's Story"
[Asia Economy Reporter Ryu Jeong-min] "The younger generation's sensitivity and empathy may find solutions to problems that the older generation could not solve due to fear of change. Above all, we must not forget that the future belongs to the future generations."
On the 20th (local time), President Moon Jae-in, attending the opening session of the 'SDG Moment (Sustainable Development Goals High-Level Meeting)' held at the United Nations General Assembly Hall in New York, USA, emphasized the importance of the 'future generation.' President Moon urged, "We must respect the future generations and gather wisdom for coexistence between generations. We must overcome the differences in thoughts and cultures between generations."
In particular, President Moon attracted attention by stepping onto the UN stage together with BTS, the world's top idol group. Tens of thousands of BTS fans flocked to the UN YouTube channel, which broadcast the SDG Moment event live.
President Moon said, "Today, outstanding young people who are communicating with youth worldwide, including BTS as the 'Presidential Special Envoys for Future Generations and Culture,' are here," adding, "I hope today's event with BTS, the best private envoys, will become an opportunity to unite the good will and actions of the future generation toward sustainable development."
RM, a member of BTS, said, "We are BTS, the special envoys of the President of the Republic of Korea. We came today to convey the story of the future generation," adding, "We thought the world had stopped, but it is gradually moving forward. We believe every choice is the beginning of change." BTS also delivered a message of hope through their hit song 'Permission to Dance.'
The common theme of the messages delivered by President Moon and BTS members at the UN General Assembly was hope. President Moon said, "Cooperation beyond borders among humanity is the first step to overcoming crises," adding, "We must go beyond merely overcoming crises to achieve 'better recovery and rebuilding.' If connected collective actions are realized, we can surely succeed."
In particular, President Moon emphasized, "We must immediately and jointly act with a spirit of inclusion and coexistence. Equitable access and distribution of COVID-19 vaccines by the international community is the beginning."
President Moon stated, "We must respond to the climate crisis through cooperation beyond borders," adding, "Korea plans to finalize its 2050 carbon neutrality scenario by the end of October and submit an enhanced NDC target at COP26."
President Moon said, "Addressing the digital divide and inequality is another pressing task of our time," adding, "We must achieve an inclusive digital transition and green transition that do not alienate people."
President Moon pledged, "The Korean people will always stand as steadfast partners on the journey of inclusive international cooperation where 'no one is left behind,' believing that no one is safe unless everyone is safe."
