[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jihwan] On the 19th, the number of domestic COVID-19 confirmed cases recorded in the early 1900s, marking the highest figure for a weekend.

The Central Disease Control Headquarters (CDCH) announced that as of midnight, 1,910 new confirmed cases were reported. The cumulative total reached 285,931.

Although this is 177 fewer than the previous day's 2,087 cases, it is the highest number recorded on a Saturday (reported on Sunday) since the start of the COVID-19 outbreak in Korea. The previous weekend record was 1,816 cases on the second Saturday of August (reported on Sunday, August 15).

In particular, the spread centered around the Seoul metropolitan area was prominent. The number of confirmed cases in the metropolitan area was 1,456, approaching 80%. Specifically, Seoul reported 732 cases, Gyeonggi 544 cases, and Incheon 180 cases. The weekly average number of confirmed cases in the metropolitan area was 1,409, marking the first time since the introduction of COVID-19 that it reached the 1,400 range. The number of confirmed cases outside the metropolitan area was 415, accounting for 22.2%. The weekly average number of confirmed cases outside the metropolitan area was 410.6.

Especially with the Chuseok holiday approaching, there is growing concern about nationwide resurgence as infections are likely to spread along large-scale population movement routes to non-metropolitan areas.

As of midnight, the nationwide first-dose COVID-19 vaccination rate was recorded at 71.0%. The number of first-dose recipients increased by 389,587 to a total of 36,467,019.

The completion rate of vaccination was 43.1%. The number of fully vaccinated individuals increased by 189,093, reaching a total of 22,123,396.
