Opposition to Ilgwang Samdeok District Apartment Approval: 7th Solo Protest at Busan City Hall
"Irresponsible Development, Green Space Destruction... Apartment Construction Not Feasible Due to Location Conditions"
On the 18th at 10:35 a.m., Oh Gyu-seok, the mayor of Busan's Gijang County, held his seventh solo protest in front of Busan City Hall against the approval of the housing construction project plan for the Ilgwang Samdeok district.
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Oh Gyu-seok, the mayor of Gijang-gun, opposed the indiscriminate development projects in the area and took to the streets again on the first day of the Chuseok holiday, targeting Busan City.
Mayor Oh held a one-person protest at 10:35 a.m. on the 18th in front of Busan City Hall, shouting "absolute opposition" to the approval of the housing construction project plan in the Samdeok district of Ilgwang-myeon.
This marks his seventh protest regarding this issue. After conducting a continuous protest for 30 days opposing the relocation of the defense company "Pungsan" factory, he has now focused his efforts on the Samdeok district after the plan was scrapped.
Oh Gyu-seok, mayor of Gijang-gun, argued that "the Samdeok district, which faces numerous problems such as traffic congestion in Ilgwang New Town and indiscriminate development causing damage to forests and green spaces, is unsuitable as a site for apartment complexes."
He stated, "Even if a bypass road connecting Ilgwang New Town to the Bansong area is opened, constructing apartment complexes on the current project site is absolutely impossible."
He added that "changing the Samdeok district unit plan area from Type 1 General Residential Area to Type 2 General Residential Area to build high-rise apartments would provide enormous privileges and profits to private developers," opposing the plan. He described it as secretive administration, bad practice administration, and a corrupt administration.
Mayor Oh emphasized, "If the Samdeok district development proceeds, the entire Hoenggye village in Ilgwang-myeon will become isolated, threatening the residents' right to survival, view, and sunlight, and causing tremendous suffering."
He maintains that building high-rise apartments is absolutely impossible unless all residents of Hoenggye village are relocated.
Oh Gyu-seok, mayor of Gijang-gun, warned, "If Busan City forcibly approves the Samdeok district plan, Gijang-gun will strongly pursue legal battles including audit requests, complaints to the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission, and civil and criminal lawsuits," adding, "Mayor Park Hyung-joon and Busan City must take full responsibility."
