[Asia Economy Reporter Seoyoung Kwon] Kim Byung-gi, the Deputy Chief of the Lee Jae-myung campaign and a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized the negative attacks from the Lee Nak-yeon camp, saying they have turned former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl's 'allegations of prosecution solicitation' and the 'documents related to the mother-in-law case response' into 'leftovers on the Chuseok table.'
Today (18th), Kim said on his Facebook, "Was Lee Nak-yeon’s declaration to stop negative campaigning a lie?" He added, "The negative attacks from Lee Nak-yeon’s camp against Lee Jae-myung have become increasingly severe. They once said that if Lee became the presidential candidate, they could not guarantee a 'One Team,' and now they have reached the point of making abusive remarks, saying he will go to prison."
Kim acknowledged, "It is true that Lee Jae-myung would find it difficult to be elected president without the support of those who back Lee Nak-yeon," but he countered, "The same applies to Lee Nak-yeon." He also said, "The reason we are not engaging in negative campaigning is not because we have nothing to do, but because we understand the importance of One Team and are restraining ourselves." This post by Kim is interpreted as a response to the ongoing criticism from the Lee Nak-yeon camp until recently.
Earlier, Seol Hoon, the election committee chairman of the Lee Nak-yeon camp and a member of the Democratic Party of Korea, criticized Lee Jae-myung during an appearance on CBS Radio's 'Hanpan Seungbu' on the 15th. At that time, Seol compared Lee to former President Lee Myung-bak, saying, "Because he was capable, we decided to overlook moral issues and make him president, but what happened in the end? He is in prison." He also reiterated Lee’s 'sister-in-law curse controversy' and 'special favors in the Daejang-dong development allegations.'
In response, Kim said, "You can never win the general election with only negative campaigning without policies," and asked, "What pledges of Lee Nak-yeon, which are imprinted on the public, are there?" He expressed deep concern, saying, "The emotional rift between supporters and the campaign is widening, which is very worrying," and urged, "Stop these acts that are poison to the regime’s reestablishment. At this rate, we will all perish together."
