[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] A pro-China politician in Hong Kong who received two doses of the Chinese-made COVID-19 vaccine Sinovac recently tested with no antibodies and received a booster shot with the Pfizer vaccine.
According to local media on the 17th, Regina Ip (葉劉淑儀), chairperson of the New People's Party, stated on the radio that although she received two doses of the Sinovac vaccine in March, a test on the 13th showed her antibody level was "zero," so she received a Pfizer booster shot on the 16th.
She emphasized, "After a certain period, no antibodies remain in my body," adding, "Even though I was vaccinated early, there is still a risk of contracting COVID-19 and even spreading it to others."
She also said, "Since my daughter received the Pfizer vaccine, I wanted to get the Pfizer vaccine as well."
Chairperson Ip is a former Hong Kong Secretary for Security and currently a member of the Hong Kong Executive Council. Senior Hong Kong government officials and pro-China politicians received the Sinovac vaccine between February and March. Currently, Hong Kong citizens can choose between the Sinovac and Pfizer vaccines.
Bloomberg reported, "Globally, questions are being raised about the effectiveness of the Sinovac vaccine," and added, "It is uncertain how effective a booster shot with Sinovac will be."
However, it also noted, "Not only Sinovac but other vaccines like Pfizer have shown reduced efficacy over time after vaccination."
