[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Chun-hee] The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety's National Institute of Food and Drug Safety Evaluation announced on the 16th that, as the use of antipyretic analgesics has increased due to fever, muscle pain, and other symptoms following COVID-19 vaccination, it will provide guidance on the types, efficacy, effects, and precautions of antipyretic analgesics.
Antipyretic analgesics containing acetaminophen as the main ingredient help relieve systemic pain and reduce fever. Since acetaminophen is less likely to cause digestive side effects such as indigestion, it can be taken on an empty stomach. However, alcohol consumption should be avoided as it may cause liver damage.
Additionally, the maximum daily dose should not exceed 4000 mg. Since other medications such as cold and headache medicines may also contain acetaminophen, caution is needed to avoid overdose.
Acetaminophen formulations are mainly distributed as immediate-release tablets and extended-release tablets. Immediate-release tablets release the active ingredient quickly, providing rapid symptom relief. They are mainly sold in doses of 500 mg, 325 mg, 300 mg, 160 mg, and 80 mg, and can be taken every 4 to 6 hours as needed. They can be taken by anyone over 4 months old. Extended-release tablets are mainly available in 625 mg and 325 mg doses and should be taken every 8 hours. They are only for children aged 12 and older and adults, and should not be split or chewed.
Currently, various generic drugs with the same efficacy and effects as acetaminophen formulations are available on the market. Detailed information about the products can be found on the Drug Safety Korea website.
