Check Experimental Statistics Before National Statistics Approval... "Promoting Big Data Utilization"
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] On the 16th, Statistics Korea announced that it will provide the 'Telecommunication Mobile Population Movement Statistics,' which analyzes domestic population movement using SK Telecom's mobile data, as the first experimental statistics service.
Starting next month, this statistic will be published weekly on the Statistics Data Center website. Users will be able to check population movement information by gender, age group, location type, and city/county/district. This will allow early identification of changes in domestic population movement patterns and can be used as basic information for economic and social policy formulation, such as analyzing population movement before and after the COVID-19 outbreak.
The newly applied 'Experimental Statistics System' utilizes data or methodologies different from traditional statistics, such as big data. Even if the existing statistical approval requirements are not met, it can be confirmed as 'experimental statistics' for a certain period, allowing publication and use.
However, to prevent user confusion, it will be clearly stated that these are not official national statistics, and usage precautions will be provided.
A Statistics Korea official stated, "To improve the efficiency of national statistics management in response to statistical demand, we plan to revise the Statistics Act to subdivide and manage national statistics differently according to their characteristics."
