Ansan Banwol Hydrogen Production Plant Joint Development Agreement
Annual Production of 22,000 Tons of Hydrogen
Choi Kwang-ho, Vice Chairman of Hanwha Construction (third from the left), Gu Hong-rim, Chairman of Banwol Fashion Color Business Cooperative (second from the left), Choi Byung-chul, CEO of Hyundai Motor Securities (fourth from the left), and Lee Jae-kyun, CEO of Samchully Asset Management, are signing the joint development agreement for the Ansan Banwol Hydrogen Production Plant and posing for a commemorative photo. A hydrogen production plant project using gas generated from a wastewater treatment plant is being launched for the first time in Korea.
Hanwha Construction announced on the 16th that it signed a Joint Development Agreement (JDA) on the 15th to build the country's first "hydrogen production plant" that produces hydrogen energy from wastewater sludge.
This joint development agreement aims to build an eco-friendly hydrogen production plant within the Ansan Banwol Dyeing Complex. Hanwha Construction, as the construction company and industry leader for the Ansan Banwol hydrogen production plant project, is promoting the project together with the Banwol Fashion Color Business Cooperative. As financial investors, Hyundai Motor Securities will be responsible for financial underwriting and business consulting, while Samchully Asset Management will handle financial support and business asset management.
The Ansan Banwol hydrogen production plant project is an eco-friendly initiative that produces approximately 22,000 tons of hydrogen annually, along with carbon dioxide and steam, through gasification of sludge generated at the wastewater treatment plant within the Ansan Banwol Dyeing Complex. This is the first project in Korea to produce hydrogen using wastewater sludge, and it contributes to carbon neutrality by recovering and selling all carbon dioxide generated during the process.
Hanwha Construction, which has extensive experience in various plants such as petrochemical and power plants both domestically and internationally, completed the world's first and largest "Daesan Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Plant" using by-product hydrogen last year. This power plant has a capacity of 50MW and produces 400,000 MWh of electricity annually, supplying power to approximately 160,000 households in the Chungnam region.
Hanwha Construction expects to secure leading competitiveness in the rapidly growing hydrogen energy sector through the construction of this hydrogen production plant. Furthermore, by integrating with its existing strengths in wind power and water treatment businesses, the company plans to evolve into a "Green Developer" that provides comprehensive solutions for eco-friendly projects.
Choi Kwang-ho, Vice Chairman of Hanwha Construction, stated, "Hanwha Construction is reviewing participation in various green hydrogen energy projects to lead the upcoming carbon-zero era. We will strengthen ESG management further by making eco-friendly businesses our future growth engine."
Meanwhile, the signing ceremony on the 15th was attended by Choi Kwang-ho, Vice Chairman of Hanwha Construction; Gu Hong-rim, Chairman of the Banwol Fashion Color Business Cooperative; Choi Byung-chul, CEO of Hyundai Motor Securities; Lee Jae-kyun, CEO of Samchully Asset Management; and other officials, who signed the agreement and pledged cooperation for the successful promotion of the project.
