[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 16th, the Seoul Metropolitan Government will hold the 'Seoul Metropolitan Government-People Power Budget Policy Council' at the Planning Situation Room on the 6th floor of Seoul City Hall.

This budget policy council, held for the first time since Mayor Oh Se-hoon's inauguration, will be attended by about 10 key party officials including Kim Ki-hyun, floor leader of the People Power Party, and Kim Do-eup, chairman of the Policy Committee, as well as major executives of Seoul including Mayor Oh Se-hoon, the first and second deputy mayors for administration, and the political deputy mayor.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government-People Power Budget Policy Council is a meeting where the Seoul mayor and People Power Party floor leader and other party officials discuss major current projects of Seoul and requests for national treasury support. The People Power Party has been holding budget policy councils nationwide at the central party level, starting from Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam on the 6th, touring metropolitan cities and provinces across the country.

The budget policy council proceeds with Seoul reporting on requests for national funding and major administrative issues, followed by a discussion led by Floor Leader Kim Ki-hyun involving participating lawmakers and Mayor Oh.

Seoul requests effective support for national funding and parliamentary cooperation for key core projects directly related to citizens' lives such as transportation, environment, and welfare. The People Power Party will thoroughly review and discuss Seoul's requests to ensure they are practically reflected in budget formulation and legislation.

Seoul will discuss support plans for 14 major projects requesting national funding next year, including compensation for legal free rides on urban railroads, construction of 70,000 long-term rental housing units, maintenance of aging sewer pipelines, and expansion of sewage treatment facilities. In particular, Seoul will emphasize the sharp increase in costs the city must bear due to welfare expansion policies newly introduced by the government next year, such as infant allowances and first meeting vouchers, and appeal for national funding to strengthen universal welfare and national responsibility.

Additionally, Seoul will seek active interest and cooperation from the People Power Party on key current projects including Mayor Oh's priority tasks such as ▲ COVID-19 quarantine ▲ stabilization of the real estate market ▲ expansion of private partnership long-term rental housing supply ▲ establishment and operation of the Seoul Learn education platform, as well as ▲ urban railroad network construction and major road undergrounding ▲ fostering of the 4th Industrial Revolution innovation industry cluster.

Mayor Oh Se-hoon of Seoul said, “I expect the active cooperation of the People Power Party in the budget and legislative process so that Seoul, the capital of the Republic of Korea, can make a leap forward as a globally competitive city,” and added, “Seoul will strengthen the effectiveness of policies through organic cooperation with the National Assembly.”
