[Asia Economy Reporter Joeslgina] Apple has unveiled its new smartwatch, the 'Apple Watch 7.' With thinner bezels, the display size has increased by 20% compared to its predecessor, and charging speed has also improved. It uses a front crystal that is resistant to cracks, earning it a reputation as the most durable watch in the series to date.
On the 14th (local time), Apple held a special event at Apple Park in Cupertino, California, introducing the Watch 7 series, which will be released this fall alongside the new smartphone, the 'iPhone 13.' Jeff Williams, Apple's Chief Operating Officer, explained, "Watch Series 7 has achieved remarkable improvements such as the largest and most advanced display, enhanced durability, and faster charging speed," adding, "Apple Watch with watchOS 8 offers useful new features that help customers communicate smoothly, track activities and workouts, and better understand their overall health and well-being."
The Watch 7 will be available in 41mm and 45mm sizes. The bezel around the display has been reduced to 1.7mm, making the screen 20% larger than the previous model. Compared to the Apple Watch 6, it can display up to 50% more text. Additionally, it features an Always-On Retina display that allows users to easily see the watch face at up to 70% brightness without raising their wrist or tapping the screen.
The user interface has also been optimized. It offers two larger font sizes and a new QWERTY keyboard. This keyboard supports input by tapping or swiping using the QuickPath feature.
Apple also emphasized that the Watch 7 boasts the most robust durability in the series. This is thanks to the newly designed front crystal, which is over 50% thicker than that of the Watch 6, effectively preventing cracks from external impacts while maintaining visual clarity. Furthermore, the Watch 7 series has received IP6X dust resistance certification and WR50 water resistance rating. Battery life remains up to 18 hours, the same as the previous model, but charging speed has increased by 33%.
Known as the "doctor on your wrist," the Watch 7, like its predecessor, includes features such as electrocardiogram (ECG) and blood oxygen saturation measurement. A new feature for cyclists has also been added. By analyzing GPS, heart rate, accelerometer, and gyroscope data, it reflects when users start cycling and the time spent stopped at traffic lights, allowing for more accurate calorie consumption measurement during cycling. The fall detection algorithm has also been updated and optimized.
The Apple Watch 7 series comes in five colors: ▲Midnight ▲Starlight ▲Green ▲Blue ▲Red. Apple also introduced watch bands compatible with all watch models.
Additionally, Apple collaborated with luxury brands Herm?s and Nike to unveil new exclusive bands and watch faces. The Nike Sport Loop will be available in three colors. The Apple Watch Herm?s offers two styles: Circuit H, featuring a vivid graphic of the signature anchor chain design on Swift leather, and Gourmette Double Tour, inspired by a 1930s dog leash design.
The Apple Watch Herm?s Gourmette Double Tour pays homage to the 1930s Herm?s dog leash design. The elastic Fauve Barenia leather-wrapped links are softly intertwined with each other.
The Apple Watch 7 starts at $399 and is scheduled for release this fall.
Meanwhile, during the online event, Apple also introduced the iPhone 13 series, consisting of the iPhone 13 mini, iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Pro, and iPhone 13 Pro Max, as well as the 9th generation iPad, 6th generation iPad mini, and Apple Watch Series 7.
