Yoon Seok-yeol and Hong Joon-pyo Lead Both Lee Jae-myung and Lee Nak-yeon in Virtual Head-to-Head Matchups
[Asia Economy Reporter Naju-seok] Two leading opposition presidential candidates, Hong Jun-pyo and Yoon Seok-youl, each surpass the ruling party's leading candidates Lee Jae-myung and Lee Nak-yeon. Notably, the gap between Hong Jun-pyo and Yoon Seok-youl in competitiveness against the ruling party candidates has narrowed to the point of showing little difference. This is interpreted as the result of three combined factors: the overall decline in support for ruling party candidates, the gradual recovery of support for former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl, and the noticeable rise of People Power Party lawmaker Hong Jun-pyo.
According to a public opinion poll conducted by Asia Economy through Win-G Korea Consulting from the 11th to 12th, surveying 1,024 voters nationwide aged 18 and over (100% mobile phone virtual numbers, automated response), in the one-on-one race between Hong Jun-pyo and Lee Jae-myung, Hong secured 46.1%, narrowly leading Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung, who received 40.2%, within the margin of error. Against former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon, Hong holds a lead beyond the margin of error.
Former Prosecutor General Yoon also showed superiority over both Lee Jae-myung and Lee Nak-yeon. Yoon defeated Governor Lee beyond the margin of error and held a lead over former leader Lee within the margin of error. Yoon demonstrated strong consolidation of his support base, showing high approval ratings among those aged 60 and over and in Daegu-Gyeongbuk (TK), traditional strongholds. Conversely, Hong performed well in traditionally weak opposition areas such as those in their 20s and Honam, confirming strong expansion potential.
In the suitability survey for conservative opposition presidential candidates, Hong recorded 32.8%, surpassing Yoon, who stood at 25.8%, for the first time in this survey. Hong's support increased by 10.7 percentage points compared to the previous survey (third week of August), while Yoon's support dropped by 3.0 percentage points, resulting in a change in ranking.
In the Democratic Party's presidential candidate suitability survey, Lee Jae-myung ranked first with 29.6%, followed by Lee Nak-yeon at 23.9%, and former Minister of Justice Chu Mi-ae at 6.6%. Former Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun, who abruptly withdrew from the race on the 13th, recorded 6.0%.
The response rate for this survey was 7.4%, and the sample was extracted with weighted values by gender, age, and region based on the resident registration population as of late January from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. The sampling error is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level.
