[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Hyung-gil] Motorcycles dedicated to delivery have been found to have an accident rate more than 15 times higher than personal motorcycles.

On the 12th, the Samsung Traffic Safety Culture Research Institute, affiliated with Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance, stated in its report on the actual conditions and safety measures of delivery two-wheeled vehicle accident risks that delivery-dedicated (paid transportation) two-wheeled vehicles experience more than two traffic accidents per vehicle per year. This rate is seven times higher than that of commercial vehicles such as taxis and more than 15 times higher than that of personal two-wheeled vehicles.

Analyzing traffic accidents by two-wheeled vehicle usage reported to Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance from 2016 to 2020, delivery two-wheeled vehicle traffic accidents increased by 23%, from 8,806 cases in 2016 to 10,793 cases in 2020.

Delivery two-wheeled vehicle accidents also showed a relatively higher frequency of traffic law violations such as signal violations and crossing the center line compared to personal two-wheeled vehicles or commercial vehicles. It was found urgent to prevent illegal operation of delivery two-wheeled vehicles, strengthen safety management to prevent accidents, expand experiential traffic safety education, and raise safety awareness among delivery two-wheeled vehicle drivers.

According to the analysis of the characteristics of traffic accidents involving delivery paid transportation two-wheeled vehicles, 65.6% of traffic law violation accidents were signal violations, which is 1.5 times higher than the signal violation accident share of personal two-wheeled vehicles (45.6%). Also, one in five cases involved crossing the center line, and 9.8% were accidents caused by unlicensed driving.

By accident type, 4 out of 10 cases (38.1%) were rear-end collisions with the vehicle ahead due to speeding or failure to drive safely, collisions with surrounding vehicles due to sudden lane changes accounted for 25.4%, and 24.2% of accidents occurred at intersections due to entering without slowing down.

Woo Sang-yong, principal researcher at the Samsung Traffic Safety Culture Research Institute, said, "With the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic and changes in dining culture trends, the operation of delivery paid transportation two-wheeled vehicles will increase further," adding, "continuous crackdowns and driver guidance on two-wheeled vehicle traffic violations such as intersection signal violations, center line crossing, and sudden lane changes, as well as reckless driving, are necessary to strengthen safety management."

He also emphasized, "It is necessary to strengthen drivers' sense of responsibility through various measures such as expanding experiential traffic safety education that allows two-wheeled vehicle drivers to directly experience high-risk driving situations," and "the government should actively improve the system by establishing a qualification system for delivery paid transportation two-wheeled vehicle drivers to verify minimum driving experience and prior safety knowledge."
