[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jinyoung] Jeong Se-gyun, a ruling party presidential candidate and former Prime Minister, visited Gangwon Province on the 9th and appealed for support, saying, "I am the only candidate who can oppose Hong Joon-pyo."
On the same day, Jeong held a press conference at the Gangwon Provincial Party Office and said, "It seems that the opposition candidate landscape is shifting from former Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl to Representative Hong Joon-pyo," adding, "The only person who can defeat Representative Hong is Jeong Se-gyun."
In a Q&A session, he stated, "In the past, leaders of the People Power Party have said that the most difficult candidate to face from the ruling party is Jeong Se-gyun, and Representative Hong himself has said this. I believe this judgment is shared by the public, which is creating an atmosphere where I can become a candidate."
At a previous meeting with party members in the Gangwon region, Jeong also emphasized, "(In the recent situation) it has already been judged that former Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon will not be able to defeat Gyeonggi Province Governor Lee Jae-myung in the primary. Furthermore, it has been determined that Governor Lee will have difficulty responding well to candidate Hong Joon-pyo in the general election," adding, "If Governor Lee was considered the candidate who could respond well to former Prosecutor General Yoon, then the candidate who can properly fight against Representative Hong is Jeong Se-gyun."
He continued, "Change will begin from now. I am confident that the atmosphere is that Jeong Se-gyun is the person who can properly respond to the changes in the opposition," and added, "Since the primary race will now see definite changes in both the ruling and opposition parties, Jeong Se-gyun is the winning card."
