[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Juhyung] Baekgu, the companion dog who stayed by the side of a collapsed woman in her 90s with dementia and ultimately saved her life, was appointed as Korea's first "Honorary 119 Rescue Dog," and is now gaining attention in the United States as well.

On the 8th (local time), the American broadcaster CNN reported Baekgu's story in an article titled "Dog Saves Owner's Life, Appointed Korea's First Honorary Rescue Dog."

The outlet described Baekgu as a "brave 4-year-old canine" and explained that "he once again showed why dogs are man's best friend."

According to the Chungnam Provincial Police, Baekgu played a significant role in rescuing a woman in her 90s, Ms. A, who was found collapsed on a rice paddy embankment on the 26th of last month.

Ms. A, who suffers from dementia, had gone missing since around 11 p.m. the previous day after leaving her home. Immediately after her disappearance, the police checked CCTV footage installed at nearby farms and collaborated with the neighborhood watch and local residents to search the area. However, heavy rain from early dawn hampered efforts to locate Ms. A.

After about 40 hours of searching, Ms. A was found collapsed in water at the edge of a rice paddy. Baekgu was closely guarding her side. The rescue team was able to find Ms. A thanks to Baekgu's body heat being detected on a thermal imaging camera. It is known that Ms. A, soaked from the rain, was difficult to detect due to hypothermia.

In particular, the police believe that Baekgu stayed by Ms. A's side, continuously sharing body warmth with her.

Immediately after the rescue, Ms. A was transferred to a nearby hospital for treatment and is currently reported to have recovered her health.

On the 6th, Baekgu was appointed as the nation's first honorary 119 rescue dog in recognition of his decisive contribution to saving Ms. A. On that day, Baekgu wore a firefighter's rank tag around his neck and received gifts and treats including a new doghouse, cake, and dog chews.

Regarding this, Chungnam Governor Yang Seung-jo said, "During a difficult time for everyone due to COVID-19, Baekgu delivered an incredible miracle that moved us all," adding, "What Baekgu showed was loyalty to his owner, which is no different from human filial piety beyond love."

Baekgu was once a stray dog. In 2018, when he was in danger after being bitten by a large dog, Ms. A and her family rescued him, forming a bond. Thanks to Ms. A's devoted care at that time, Baekgu was able to regain his strength.
