<LX Semicon-Microsoft, to Collaborate on Developing 3D Sensing Solutions>


[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] LX Semicon announced on the 8th that it will collaborate with Microsoft (MS) to develop 3D sensing solutions.


According to LX Semicon, the two companies recently signed a business agreement to develop solutions utilizing MS's 3D Time-of-Flight (ToF) sensing technology.


ToF is a technology that precisely measures the time it takes for light emitted toward an object to be reflected back, calculating the distance. When combined with a camera, it can represent objects in three dimensions. Recently, 3D ToF sensing technology has been recognized as a core technology that enables devices such as virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) to quickly and accurately recognize space. Its applications are increasing in various industries including mobile devices, automobiles, and logistics.


MS is known to possess top-level ToF sensing technology in the market. MS provides this technology to partners by building an ecosystem that allows its application in various fields such as manufacturing, robotics, automobiles, and the Internet of Things (IoT). MS's 3D sensing technology has been applied to MS products such as 'Kinect' in gaming, and 'HoloLens' and 'Azure Kinect' in mixed reality.


LX Semicon has been seeking sensing solutions to apply in new fields such as home IoT, logistics, and automobiles, and plans to first develop solutions utilizing MS's 3D ToF sensing technology. MS will support LX Semicon with 3D sensing technology as well as object recognition services based on the customer platform through the cloud platform Azure.


Jae-deok Lee, Executive Director of LX Semicon, said, "Through cooperation on MS's cloud-based 3D sensing platform, we will provide customized solutions that can create new future value in various fields."
