On the 2nd, multiple reports were received by the Jeju Coast Guard about pink substances floating in various parts of the Jeju sea.
According to the Jeju Coast Guard, starting around 11 a.m. near Naedopo Port, reports of pink substances floating were consecutively received at 12:12 p.m. near Yeondaepo Port in Oedo-dong, and at 12:34 p.m. near Iho Port in Iho-dong.
When the Coast Guard dispatched personnel to the scene, they confirmed that pink liquid was widely spread in the sea near each port.
The Coast Guard immediately requested sample analysis from the National Institute of Fisheries Science, and it was revealed that the pink substance was 'Noctiluca.'
Known as harmless red tide called 'Noctiluca scintillans,' it is known not to have a significant impact on the marine ecosystem.
According to the National Institute of Fisheries Science, Noctiluca appears after heavy rain and is a temporary phenomenon that gradually disappears naturally.
Areas densely populated with Noctiluca glow like fluorescence when boats pass by at night, but during the day, they are known to have a pinkish hue.
The Coast Guard confirmed that Noctiluca is a red tide phenomenon, not marine pollution such as oil, and has completed eradication measures through control operations.
