[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyewon] Koo Ja-eun, chairman of LS Mtron, recently joined the "Save the Bees Movement" through urban beekeeping, taking small actions to improve global warming and environmental pollution.

According to LS Group on the 2nd, Chairman Koo started urban beekeeping last year by installing a small beehive in the backyard of his home in Seoul as part of the global effort to save the rapidly declining bee population.

The number of bees living in the beehive installed by Chairman Koo increased from about 40,000 to 150,000 within a year, and the amount of honey produced as a byproduct reached 10 liters annually.

Chairman Koo separately packages the honey with a label stating, "Started beekeeping to increase the bee population, but produced honey due to the excessive amount," and gifts it to close acquaintances to raise awareness and encourage participation in this activity.

Bees are insects that pollinate between flowers of plants, and if they become extinct, about 70% of the top 100 crops cultivated by humans could disappear. Since 2017, the European Union (EU) has designated May 20th as "World Bee Day" annually, and the importance of bees as insects crucial to the Earth's ecological environment has recently been rediscovered.

LS Group's training center, LS Miraewon, has also been participating in a native bee breeding project to save the Earth's ecological environment in collaboration with the Anseong Agricultural Technology Center since July this year.

At the LS Miraewon beekeeping site, 26 beehives capable of housing about 400,000 native bees have been installed, and approximately 60 kg of native honey expected to be harvested around November will be delivered to welfare facilities and low-income groups in Anseong City through LS's annual sharing event.
