[Asia Economy Reporter Na Ye-eun] A study has found that the COVID-19 vaccine from the American pharmaceutical company Moderna produces more than twice the number of immune antibodies compared to Pfizer's vaccine.

On the 31st, Bloomberg News reported that a comparison of antibody formation results was made by vaccinating about 2,500 healthcare workers in Belgium with Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 vaccines respectively, leading to this conclusion.

This research result was announced as a letter from Belgian researchers to the American Medical Association Journal was disclosed the previous day.

According to the report, the average antibody concentration in people who received two doses of the Moderna vaccine was 2881 U/mL, while the antibody concentration for the Pfizer vaccine was 1108 U/mL, more than twice as high.

The report attributed the difference in antibody formation to the difference in the amount of active ingredients in the two vaccines and the interval between the first and second doses. The Moderna vaccine contains more active ingredients than the Pfizer vaccine, and the longer dosing interval helped antibody formation.

The active ingredient in the Moderna vaccine is 100 μg, whereas the Pfizer vaccine contains 30 μg of active ingredient. Also, the interval between the first and second doses of the Moderna vaccine is 4 weeks, while Pfizer's is 3 weeks.

Meanwhile, earlier research by the Mayo Clinic Health System in the United States comparing the 'breakthrough infection prevention effect' among vaccinated individuals from January to July showed that the Moderna vaccine reduces the risk of COVID-19 breakthrough infections more than Pfizer's vaccine. According to that study, the breakthrough infection prevention rate for Moderna recipients was 76%, while Pfizer's vaccine was only 42%.
