[Jeju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Seogwipo Maritime Police Station (Chief Hwang Junhyun) announced on the 24th that it will install 'foreign language notices and signs' on the separation and disposal methods of waste oil and waste materials (oil rags, waste filters) at waste oil storage sites of fishing boats in major ports and harbors.
Until now, education and publicity on proper disposal methods of waste oil and others to prevent marine pollution have mainly targeted domestic crew members.
However, as the proportion of foreign crew members continues to increase and cases where foreign crew members directly handle fishing boat waste increase, foreign language notices were newly created to prevent cases of improper handling due to language barriers and lack of knowledge of procedures.
Seogwipo Maritime Police will install foreign language translated notices and signs on the separation and disposal methods of waste oil and waste materials at five major ports and harbors in the jurisdiction.
A Seogwipo Maritime Police official said, "With the installation of these notices, we hope that the management of waste oil storage sites will improve and that prompt waste disposal such as separation and disposal will be facilitated through expanded education targeting foreign crew members, which had been insufficient until now."
