Professor Sangwoo Ha's Team at Chosun University Hospital Achieves 2,300 Cases of Neurovascular Angiography and Interventional Procedures

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Professor Ha Sang-woo’s neurosurgery team at Chosun University Hospital has achieved 2,300 cases of ‘cerebral angiography and interventional procedures.’ It has been five years since the first procedure was performed in 2016.

Cerebrovascular diseases refer to conditions such as cerebral hemorrhage caused by ruptured blood vessels leading to blood accumulation, cerebral aneurysms that swell and burst, and cerebral infarction caused by narrowing or blockage of blood vessels. According to the 2019 cause of death statistics released by Statistics Korea, it ranks fourth, making it a disease that requires special attention.

Treatment for cerebrovascular diseases involves ‘cerebral vascular interventional procedures,’ which use small and precise treatment devices such as catheters, platinum coils, and stents inserted into the blood vessels to treat them. This method is widely used due to its high safety and efficacy.

Professor Ha’s team performs interventional procedures using ‘cerebral angiography,’ which assesses abnormalities in cerebral blood vessels by injecting contrast agents to check cerebral blood flow at the ‘Hybrid Vascular Center.’

Cerebral vascular interventional procedures have the advantages of causing less physical burden and pain to patients, reducing risks such as scars and brain parenchymal damage associated with craniotomy procedures like scalp and skull removal, and enabling faster recovery.

In particular, since 2019, Professor Ha Sang-woo’s neurosurgery team has been responsible for more than 50% of all cerebral vascular interventional procedures performed in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions.

Professor Ha said, “The Department of Neurosurgery is equipped with specialized subfields such as cerebrovascular surgery, brain tumor surgery, spinal neurosurgery, and pediatric neurosurgery, and we strive for patients’ rapid recovery,” adding, “We will continue to do our best to improve patient satisfaction through accurate diagnosis.”

Meanwhile, Professor Ha Sang-woo was selected as a ‘Certified Neurointerventionist’ by the Korean Society of Interventional Neuroradiology (KSIN) in 2020, and Chosun University Hospital has been designated as a ‘Certified Neurointervention Hospital’ for five years since 2021, recognized as an institution providing high-quality medical services in the diagnosis and treatment of cerebrovascular-related diseases.
