Sejong City Provides Additional Support for Early Retirement of 650 Old Diesel Vehicles

[Asia Economy (Sejong) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] Sejong City has secured an additional budget of 1.5 billion KRW to provide extra early retirement support for 650 diesel vehicles rated grade 5 in the second half of this year.

The support targets diesel vehicles rated grade 5 and road-use type 3 construction machinery manufactured under emission standards before 2005, which have been continuously registered in Sejong for more than 6 months and owned for more than 6 months.

Additionally, vehicles must have passed the automotive sensory inspection with a suitable rating, be operable, and must not have previously received government support for attaching emission reduction devices or been converted to low-emission engines to qualify for support.

The support amount is determined based on the quarterly vehicle standard value calculated by the Insurance Development Institute, with a maximum support limit per vehicle set at 3 million KRW for vehicles under 3.5 tons gross weight and up to 30 million KRW for vehicles 3.5 tons or more.

However, for vehicles under 3.5 tons gross weight that are small business vehicles, commercial vehicles, vehicles without developed or attachable reduction devices, or vehicles owned by low-income groups, the maximum support limit increases to 6 million KRW.

In addition to early retirement, the city is also promoting projects for attaching emission reduction devices (60 vehicles) and PM-NOx simultaneous reduction devices (10 vehicles).

The emission reduction device attachment project subsidizes the amount excluding the 10% to 12.5% (300,000 KRW) personal contribution of the attachment cost, and the PM-NOx simultaneous reduction device attachment project targets grade 5 diesel vehicles from 2002 to 2007 with engine displacements of 5,800 to 17,000 cc and power outputs of 240 to 460 PS.

Eligible vehicles for emission reduction device and PM-NOx simultaneous reduction device support are grade 5 diesel vehicles registered in Sejong as of the announcement date, have passed the regular vehicle inspection with a suitable rating, and are operable.

Whether a vehicle is rated grade 5 can be confirmed through the Ministry of Environment call center and the vehicle emission grade system website.

Applications can only be submitted via the vehicle emission grade system website or by registered mail.

For more detailed information, refer to the announcement posted in the public notice section on the city hall website.

Yoon Bong-hee, head of the Environmental Policy Division of the city, said, “We will continue to reduce old diesel vehicles to improve air quality and reduce carbon emissions to respond to future climate change.”
