[Asia Economy Reporter Yoon Seul-gi] Due to the northward movement of Typhoon No. 12 'Omais,' heavy rain accompanied by thunder, lightning, and strong winds fell over Busan for about two hours, causing flooding in various parts of the city and resulting in traffic restrictions and other damages.


According to the Busan Meteorological Office, as of 2 a.m. on the 24th, the area with the highest rainfall was Geumjeong-gu (158mm), followed by Busanjin (144.5mm), Gangseo-gu (131.5mm), Buk-gu (110mm), and Jung-gu Daecheong-dong observatory (107.4mm).


In Geumjeong-gu, which was within the typhoon's influence zone, a maximum hourly rainfall of 88mm was recorded from 11:43 p.m. on the 23rd to 12:43 a.m. on the 24th.

The maximum wind speed recorded at the Oryukdo observatory at 12:50 a.m. that day was 30.6 m/s. On land, the Daecheong-dong observatory recorded the strongest wind speed at 28.7 m/s at 1:01 a.m.


The Korea Meteorological Administration classifies the maximum wind speed of typhoons into five levels, and the wind speeds at Oryukdo and Daecheong-dong observatories fall into the 'medium' category of 25?33 m/s, indicating a strength capable of blowing off roofs.

Typhoon 'Omais' brought not only heavy rain and strong winds but also thunder and lightning, producing loud noises and flashes that disturbed citizens' sleep.


According to the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, as of 6 a.m. on the 24th, no casualties had been reported. However, flooding damage reports continued due to the maximum hourly rainfall of 88mm.


In the early hours of the same day at 12 a.m., the Imgi Stream overflowed in Cheolma-myeon, Gijang-gun, flooding five houses and commercial buildings. Earlier, around 11:50 p.m., a man was rescued from a car submerged under the Gul Bridge in Buk-gu. Additionally, a woman trapped in a flooded karaoke room in Suyeong-gu was also rescued.


Meanwhile, the Korea Meteorological Administration predicted that by around 9 a.m. on the 24th, Typhoon 'Omais' would weaken into an extratropical cyclone about 60 km northwest of Ulleungdo, and the entire country would be out of the typhoon's influence.
