Korean and Japanese Prospective Master's and Doctoral Students Heat Up Online... Next-Generation Academic Forum on the 'Future' Kicks Off The international academic conference of the Korea-Japan Next Generation Academic Forum is being held online via Zoom.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Next-generation researchers from Korea and Japan discussing the ‘future’ are heating up online.

‘Emerging’ scholars pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in Korea and Japan are comprehensively addressing issues humanity faces, including politics, law, history, culture, and gender.

The 18th Korea-Japan Next-Generation Academic Forum International Conference, hosted by the East-West University Japan Research Center and organized by the Korea-Japan Next-Generation Academic Forum, was held over two days on the 20th and 21st via Zoom online.

President Jang Je-guk of East-West University, who represents this forum, served as the ‘host.’ Marking its 18th anniversary this year, the forum has taken on a more serious tone.

This forum’s theme was ‘Post-COVID and Academism.’ Next-generation researchers who will bear the future of Korea and Japan participated, divided into eight sections: international relations, politics and law, history, language and literature, society and gender, religion and thought, folklore and anthropology, and culture and arts, conducting presentations and discussions.

On the first day, the 20th, presentations by section began at 9:30 a.m., followed by the 18th-anniversary commemorative event at 1:20 p.m.

President Jang Je-guk gave the opening address as the representative of the Korea-Japan Next-Generation Academic Forum, followed by a keynote lecture by Professor Yoshimi Shunya of the University of Tokyo titled ‘Where Are Universities? What Are Universities in the Post-COVID Era?’ Presentations and discussions by section then resumed.

The next day, the 21st, concluded with presentations from four sections starting at 9:30 a.m. and an afternoon meeting with supervising professors.

From the Korean side, 47 master’s and doctoral students from 14 universities including East-West University, Korea University, Seoul National University, Chung-Ang University, and Pusan National University participated.

From the Japanese side, 65 students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees from 23 universities including the University of Tokyo, Waseda University, and Keio University participated as presenters and designated discussants.

Additionally, 20 graduate students from Korea, China, the United States, Belgium, and France studying in Japan also joined. A large gathering of human resources heralding the next generation of leaders.

Each year, about 300 next-generation researchers from various fields attend this academic forum, with over 5,000 having participated to date. It has grown into a global talent pool and human network.

President Jang Je-guk of East-West University, the forum representative, said, “Despite the COVID situation, I hope that next-generation researchers from Korea and Japan can share research achievements, form international networks among researchers, and grow into excellent researchers.”

The Korea-Japan Next-Generation Academic Forum was established in 2004 in Busan to promote intellectual and human exchanges among next-generation researchers from Korea and Japan.

The forum secretariat is managed by the East-West University Japan Research Center. It is an international academic conference held annually alternating between Korea and Japan, with large participation from next-generation researchers enrolled in master’s and doctoral programs at universities in both countries.
