Genesis Brand's First Model Based on Electric Vehicle-Dedicated Platform Unveiled
Realizing the Most Futuristic and Sleek Coupe-Style CUV with 'Dynamic Elegance'
[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] Genesis unveiled the design of its first dedicated electric vehicle, the ‘GV60,’ for the first time on the 19th. Hyundai Motor Group plans to actively target the luxury electric vehicle market using the Genesis GV60 as a stepping stone.
The GV60 is the first Genesis model based on Hyundai Motor Group’s dedicated electric vehicle platform, E-GMP (Electric-Global Modular Platform).
E-GMP enables the application of a vehicle structure, chassis, motor, and battery optimized for electric vehicles compared to internal combustion platforms, allowing for high electric efficiency and spacious interiors. Hyundai’s Ioniq 5 and Kia’s EV6 were previously launched based on the E-GMP platform.
Exterior embodying ‘Dynamic Elegance’
The GV60 implements a coupe-style crossover utility vehicle (CUV) design based on Genesis brand’s design identity of ‘Dynamic Elegance.’ The front features a refined and voluminous body with Genesis’s signature dual-line quad lamps. Below the lamp level, a wide and dynamic-shaped Crest Grille emphasizes a high-performance image.
The hood features the newly introduced Genesis emblem for the first time. Notably, the emblem’s thickness has been reduced by nearly 80%, and a delicate guilloch? pattern, seen in luxury watches, is engraved on its flat surface. The guilloch? pattern refers to a design technique that intricately engraves straight, curved, or irregular lines on metal surfaces.
The side profile showcases a smooth and dynamic design typical of a high-performance coupe style. From the front hood to the rear spoiler, the silhouette is simple yet sharply refined, with three-dimensional volume emphasizing the high-performance image.
The rear applies a two-line rear combination lamp that adds a sporty feel to the emotional and restrained body, and a fixed rear wing spoiler is mounted at the end of the coupe-style roof to express a dynamic high-performance image.
The interior design of the GV60 pursues a spacious environment based on its unique philosophy of ‘beauty of emptiness.’ The most eye-catching feature inside is the spherical electronic shift knob called the Crystal Sphere.
The Crystal Sphere emits mood lighting when the engine is off, providing aesthetic satisfaction to customers, and when the engine starts, the sphere rotates to reveal the shift controls, creating an interior atmosphere as if riding in future mobility.
The floating console, where the Crystal Sphere is located, is designed to appear as if it is suspended in mid-air, maximizing the interior space sensation for passengers along with the slim cockpit and flat floor characteristic of dedicated electric vehicles. Additionally, the wide and slimly shaped crash pad (dashboard) enhances the comfortable interior space.
Full-scale Entry into the Luxury Electric Vehicle Market
Genesis is expected to aggressively target the luxury electric vehicle market based on the GV60. Currently, the domestic luxury electric vehicle market is led by imported cars such as Tesla, Porsche, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi. Models like the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron, priced over 100 million KRW per unit, have recently gained significant popularity in the market.
Genesis also achieved results by launching the electrified G80 model last month, surpassing 2,000 cumulative contracts. The GV60 is expected to be released as early as next month, with the price likely set below 60 million KRW to qualify for subsidies. Genesis plans to sequentially release derivative electric vehicles based on existing models such as the GV70 electric vehicle and GV80 electric vehicle.
Hyundai Motor Group will also expand its electric vehicle lineup by launching models such as the Ioniq 6, Ioniq 7, and a premium version of the EV6 starting next year. Hyundai Motor Group plans to introduce more than 23 electric vehicle models across Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis by 2025. Hyundai Motor Group Chairman Chung Euisun has set a goal to raise the global electric vehicle market share to over 10% by 2025.
A Genesis official stated, "The GV60, Genesis’s first dedicated electric vehicle, will provide a differentiated luxury electric vehicle experience based on its unique brand identity," adding, "Detailed information on the vehicle’s new technologies and performance will be disclosed according to the release schedule."
