[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Hyewon] As the ‘home cafe’ culture of enjoying coffee at home becomes more popular, more and more consumers are enjoying capsule coffee at home and in the office. Naturally, consumer interest in how to separate and recycle coffee capsules is also increasing. What are some ways to continue enjoying good coffee while also caring for the environment?
According to the industry on the 15th, Nespresso operates its own recycling program, collecting used capsules for recycling.
Nespresso has been recycling coffee capsules in Korea since 2011, separating collected capsules into aluminum and coffee grounds for recycling.
According to Nespresso, recycling aluminum saves about 95% of the energy compared to producing new aluminum, allowing aluminum recycling and processing with only 5% of the energy. Aluminum is known as the best method to protect coffee from external elements such as oxygen, humidity, and light, preserving the optimal taste and aroma.
Nespresso Club members can participate in recycling easily by putting used coffee capsules in a recycling bag and bringing them to a nearby Nespresso boutique, or by requesting home collection through the website, mobile app, or phone reservation.
When a collection is requested, capsules are picked up directly, and the collected capsules are recycled with social enterprises: aluminum is reused for household items, car parts, etc., and coffee grounds are recycled as fertilizer for farms.
More details can be found in the Nespresso recycling program introduction video on YouTube and on the official Nespresso website.
