Introducing Our Work Environment: 5-Day Workweek, 15 Days Annual Leave
Hiring Dedicated 'Helper' Staff... 485 Billion KRW Investment in Automation Equipment
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bo-kyung] Coupang released a video on the Coupang Newsroom homepage on the 13th to support delivery workers in observance of the 'No Delivery Day.'
Unlike Coupang delivery workers who are guaranteed a five-day workweek and 15 days of annual leave, totaling 130 days off per year, the video mainly encourages rest for other delivery workers who are not guaranteed a five-day workweek.
The video conveys a message supporting the day off for other delivery workers ahead of tomorrow's (14th) No Delivery Day. It also states that "Coupang Friends (delivery personnel) usually work five days a week with sufficient rest, enabling deliveries even on Sundays, and currently, one out of three Coupang Friends is resting."
In fact, Coupang directly employs its delivery personnel, called Coupang Friends, and guarantees them a five-day workweek and days off. Coupang Friends are guaranteed 15 days of annual leave and 130 days off per year. This means that every day, one out of three Coupang Friends is resting. Additionally, Coupang provides the 'Coupang Care' program, which offers up to four weeks of paid leave.
Unlike other courier companies, Coupang operates separate sorting staff called Helpers, who are dedicated to improving the working environment for delivery personnel. Approximately 4,500 Coupang Helpers work nationwide, responsible for sorting delivery boxes and transferring them to delivery vehicles. Furthermore, Coupang Friends receive coverage under the four major social insurances, as well as payments for vehicles, fuel, communication expenses, and retirement benefits.
A Coupang representative said, "We hope that No Delivery Day will serve as a stepping stone not just for a single day off but for discussing and advancing stable working conditions for all delivery workers," adding, "We planned this video to support that cause."
Meanwhile, to improve delivery workers' working conditions, Coupang has applied artificial intelligence (AI) technology to its logistics centers and delivery systems and invested 485 billion KRW in automation facilities over the past two years.
