[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] Eliud Kipchoge (37, Kenya) achieved back-to-back Olympic gold medals in the men's marathon.
Kipchoge won the gold medal with a time of 2 hours 8 minutes 38 seconds in the men's marathon event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics held on the 8th in Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan.
Kipchoge also won the gold medal at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics. By securing the gold medal again at the Tokyo Olympics, he became the third athlete in history, after Abebe Bikila (Ethiopia) and Waldemar Cierpinski (East Germany), to achieve consecutive Olympic gold medals in the men's marathon.
Meanwhile, naturalized Kenyan marathoner Oh Juhan withdrew due to thigh pain just before the 15km mark. Shim Jongsup successfully finished the race in 2 hours 20 minutes 36 seconds, placing 49th overall.
