Jeong Eun-bo to Be Appointed Financial Supervisory Service Chief, Recommended by Financial Services Commission Chair and Appointed by President

[Asia Economy Reporters Ryu Jeong-min and Lee Ji-eun] On the 5th, President Moon Jae-in nominated Song Doo-hwan, representative lawyer of the law firm Hangyeol, as the candidate for Chairperson of the National Human Rights Commission, and Ko Seung-beom, a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Korea, as the candidate for Chairman of the Financial Services Commission.


Park Soo-hyun, Senior Secretary for Public Communication at the Blue House, announced the personnel results for two minister-level and six vice minister-level positions on the same day.


The Vice Minister of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety was appointed as Ko Gyu-chang, Director General of the Planning and Coordination Office, and the Head of the Disaster and Safety Management Headquarters of the Ministry of the Interior and Safety was appointed as Lee Seung-woo, Director of the Disaster Cooperation Office. The 2nd Vice Minister of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy was appointed as Park Ki-young, Director General of the Planning and Coordination Office, and the Head of the Trade Negotiation Headquarters of the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy was appointed as Yeo Han-gu, Secretary for New Southern and New Northern Policies at the Blue House, respectively.

In addition, Park Mu-ik, Director General of the Transportation and Logistics Office at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, was appointed as the Administrator of the Administrative City Construction Agency, and Hong Hyun-ik, Senior Research Fellow at the Sejong Institute, was appointed as President of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy.


Minister-level nominees Song and Ko are scheduled to be appointed after confirmation hearings in the National Assembly.


Song, who passed the 22nd Judicial Examination, has served as president of the Lawyers for a Democratic Society and as a Justice of the Constitutional Court. He also served as a special prosecutor for the 2003 North Korean remittance case.


Ko, who passed the 28th Administrative Examination, has served as Director General of the Financial Policy Bureau at the Financial Services Commission and as a member of the Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of Korea. On the 5th, the Financial Services Commission nominated Jung Eun-bo, South Korea’s chief negotiator for the Korea-US defense cost-sharing talks, as the new Governor of the Financial Supervisory Service. The Governor of the Financial Supervisory Service is nominated by the Chairman of the Financial Services Commission and appointed by the President.


A Blue House official said regarding the appointments of the Board of Audit and Inspection Chairperson and the Minister of Oceans and Fisheries, which were not made this time, "We are carefully considering appointing a suitable candidate with the work capability and morality that fit the role and function of the Board of Audit and Inspection," and added, "(Regarding the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries) the current minister is performing that role well."
