Ministry of Education Discusses High School Credit System Teacher Support Measures with Teacher Organization Council

[Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] The Ministry of Education is forming a consultative body with teacher organizations to explore support measures for teachers ahead of the implementation of the high school credit system.

On the 5th, the Ministry of Education announced that it will hold the first meeting of the high school credit system teacher organization consultative body online. The meeting will include six high school teachers recommended by six teacher organizations and officials from the Ministry of Education.

The six teacher organizations are the Federation of Korean Teachers' Unions, New School Network, Practical Education Teachers' Association, Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union, Good Teachers Movement, and the Korean Federation of Teachers' Associations.

The high school credit system teacher organization consultative body will focus on discussing support measures such as reducing teachers' workload and strengthening the capacity to operate the credit system, in order to address concerns and difficulties in the field ahead of the full implementation of the high school credit system in 2025.

Lee Sang-su, Director of the School Innovation Support Office, stated, "I hope the high school credit system teacher organization consultative body will serve as a direct communication channel between the Ministry of Education and schools regarding the high school credit system." He added, "Since various teacher organizations are participating, we will listen to the diverse perspectives of teachers and strive to find practical and concrete measures for the successful establishment of the high school credit system that teachers can truly feel."

The high school credit system refers to a system where students complete various subjects according to their career paths and graduate upon meeting the required cumulative credits. With the introduction of the high school credit system, students can select subjects tailored to their career paths, enabling customized classes, and even in general high schools, they can take advanced and specialized subjects. It was introduced in Meister high schools last year, partially introduced in general high schools from next year, and will be fully applied in 2025.
