It is better to cancel reservations at prestigious golf courses as early as possible. This is to give other golfers a chance.
In golf, cancellations are more important than reservations.
In fact, golfers who make weekend reservations but do not show up (No-show) are a problem. In severe cases, they are called "Swindlers," meaning "reservation default scammers." Shameless golfers who cancel just one hour before the round are also "A shameless golfer." Golfers who frequently change their reservations are called "Turkey," because a turkey changes the color of its neck more than seven times a day.
Recently, prestigious golf courses in the US and Europe are troubled by these golfers. During weekends or busy periods, they collect green fees in advance by credit card and implement systems that do not refund for minimum reservations or changes. The Old Course at St Andrews in Scotland is a representative example. Golf courses in Hawaii, Pebble Beach in California, and those near major cities in the US commonly apply this rule.
Moreover, penalty systems are activated for those who cancel reservations without notice. Booking rights are revoked for 3 to 4 weeks, or they are banned from entry altogether. When canceling, one must explain the situation well and have reasonable understanding to receive a reduction in cancellation fees (Can you understand the situation and cancel it?). Always read the cancellation policy when making a reservation and comply within the regulations if a situation arises.
A: Pelican Hill Pro-Shop. May I help you?
B: Yes, I made a reservation for a foursome for one o’clock on Sunday, Aug 15th under the name of Kimberly Park.
A: Yes, I see your reservation.
B: I’m very sorry, but I have to cancel this reservation. I have to return to Seoul a couple of days earlier than expected.
A: That’s all right, Ms. Park. We hope to see you here again soon.
