Cheon Jong-won (25, The North Face Climbing Team) failed to advance to the finals in the newly introduced Olympic sport of sport climbing. On the 3rd, at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics men's combined sport climbing qualifiers held at Aomi Urban Sports Park in Tokyo, Japan, he ranked 10th overall in speed, bouldering, and lead combined. Only the top 8 qualify for the finals.

Cheon Jong-won, the combined gold medalist at the 2018 Jakarta-Palembang Asian Games, was highly anticipated but placed 5th in speed, 10th in bouldering, and 16th in lead. The combined event ranks athletes based on their overall performance in speed, bouldering, and lead. The athlete with the lowest product of rankings across the three disciplines is ranked first. Speed is a race to climb a 15m high, 95-degree inclined artificial wall as fast as possible. Cheon Jong-won touched the pad in 6.21 seconds in lane A.

However, in bouldering, where climbers must pass various artificial structures on a 4.5m high wall without a rope within 4 minutes, he recorded '1T3z 3 10'. This means he attempted the top hold ('top') three times and succeeded once, and attempted the middle hold ('zone') ten times and succeeded three times. Up to this point, Cheon Jong-won was ranked 5th in total score. In lead climbing, where climbers try to ascend as high as possible within 6 minutes on a 15m high wall with artificial protrusions, he reached the 26th hold at 2 minutes 34 seconds before falling.
