[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] On the 12th day of the Tokyo Olympics, July 3, 3,000 new cases of COVID-19 were confirmed in Tokyo, Japan, the host city.

Tokyo announced that 3,709 new COVID-19 cases were reported that day. This is an increase of 1,514 cases compared to the previous day and 861 cases compared to the same day of the previous week. The number of COVID-19 cases in Tokyo on this day was the third highest ever, following 4,058 cases on June 31 and 3,865 cases on June 29.

The Japanese government issued the fourth state of emergency in Tokyo from June 12 to prevent the spread of COVID-19, but the rate of spread has instead accelerated. Japan's COVID-19 state of emergency includes requests to refrain from going out, restrictions on restaurant operations, and expansion of telecommuting.

Due to frequent declarations of states of emergency, cases of non-compliance with these requests by the government and local governments have increased, and it appears that the effect of suppressing the floating population is not being properly realized.
