Seoul Metro Awards Seven Subway Heroes for the First Half of the Year... Rewards Granted

Seoul Metro Awards Seven Subway Heroes for the First Half of the Year... Rewards Granted Hwang Suho (second from the left) is receiving a plaque of appreciation and a reward at Gildong Station and taking a commemorative photo.

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul Metro announced on the 4th that it has selected subway heroes who actively helped passengers and ensured safety on Seoul Subway Lines 1 to 8 during the first half of this year. The selected heroes are citizens Baek Na-young, Oh Ki-woon, Oh Seung-joo, Yoon Soo-bin, Lee Bong-won, Choi Hyun-woong, and Hwang Soo-ho.

From July 28 to 30, the Metro invited the selected heroes to the stations where they each made their heroic efforts, presenting them with prize money and plaques of appreciation to express gratitude and honor their righteous actions.

Among the heroes, Hwang Soo-ho was recognized for promptly extinguishing a fire at the water bottle holder installed in the waiting room of Gildong Station during early morning hours, thereby "protecting" the station's safety. At around 3:42 a.m. on July 3, an unidentified arsonist passed through the open passage on the first basement floor of Gildong Station on Line 5 and set fire to the safety belt attached to an octagonal chair. The fire only burned the safety belt and the water bottle holder to which the belt was attached, fortunately not spreading elsewhere, but it could have caused a serious incident.

Hwang, who happened to witness the fire set by the arsonist while passing through the open passage, immediately took sand from an emergency sand box located in a corner of the passage and scattered it, successfully extinguishing the fire and preventing further damage.

Lee Bong-won and Oh Ki-woon also made significant contributions by actively helping a collapsed passenger at Eungam Station. At around 9:34 a.m. on February 26, Lee and Oh saw a middle-aged man collapse on the platform at Eungam Station. While station staff performed CPR, they assisted by massaging the man's hands and legs to promote blood circulation, striving to save his life. Thanks to their efforts, the man was safely transported to a hospital and recovered his health.

Meanwhile, Seoul Metro holds a Citizen Award Review Committee twice a year, in the first and second halves, to select and reward citizens who have played a major role in preventing safety accidents such as facility malfunctions, life rescues, fire suppression, and crime response in the subway. A total of 12 citizens have been selected as heroes over the past four years (2017?2020).

Seoul Metro stated, "We once again express our gratitude to the heroes who spared no effort to protect subway safety."
