[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Sang-hyun] Gimhae City in Gyeongnam announced on the 3rd that it will promote the 'Metropolitan Unit Air Improvement Support Project,' which integrates support for replacing air pollution prevention facilities and odor improvement projects targeting odor-emitting businesses in the semi-industrial areas of Jinyeong and Bonsan-ri, where odor complaints have recently surged.

This support project was prepared to provide integrated support on a metropolitan scale to supplement the limitations of the existing dispersed support method at the individual unit level for regional environmental improvement.

Currently, the Jinyeong and Bonsan areas are densely populated with odor-emitting businesses such as asphalt concrete, feed, and paint factories, and odor complaints have surged since the development of nearby new town residential sites.

Based on the results of an odor status survey conducted last year by the Korea Environment Corporation, the city designated and announced the area as an odor management zone in July this year, and this project is a follow-up measure.

The city will support 90% of the installation costs for odor prevention facilities for about 20 businesses with a project budget of 1 billion KRW this year (50% national funds, 40% local funds, 10% self-payment).

The support targets are small and medium-sized enterprises or mid-sized companies within the Jinyeong and Bonsan semi-industrial areas, and the final selection will be made by comprehensively evaluating the urgency of odor improvement and the appropriateness of odor prevention facility construction methods based on the 2020 odor status survey results.

Applications will be accepted from the 4th to the 22nd and can be submitted by visiting or mailing to the Climate and Air Division of City Hall.

For more detailed information, please refer to the announcement posted on the city hall website.

Kim Tae-moon, Director of the Environment Bureau, said, "This project is a new method that provides integrated support for air pollutants and odors on a metropolitan scale," adding, "We will do our best to create a pleasant urban environment through odor reduction support and follow-up management of odor-emitting businesses."
