[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] "We are focused on developing solutions that can prevent vehicle accidents caused by driver errors and save thousands of lives, and implementing these solutions in real life."
LG, which has identified the automotive electronics sector as a future business and is strengthening its competitiveness, announced this on the 3rd through its global website while introducing some of the key technologies the company is focusing on.
The solutions LG promotes with cutting-edge technology are the ‘Driver Monitoring System (DMS)’ and ‘Interior Monitoring System (IMS),’ which combine vehicle micro cameras and artificial intelligence (AI). These are strategic moves with future mobility businesses such as autonomous vehicles in mind.
DMS is a solution where AI detects the driver through a micro camera. It not only recognizes the driver’s face but also learns usual driving patterns to prevent strangers from operating the vehicle. LG explained, "Even if the driver is wearing a mask, DMS can detect and analyze the driver’s face."
IMS is a solution that analyzes objects inside the vehicle. It accurately distinguishes whether an item is a personal belonging like a wallet or a person, and if a child is left inside the vehicle, it notifies the owner. The company expects this to contribute to preventing tragic accidents where children left unattended in vehicles due to driver negligence lose their lives.

LG is currently mass-producing these solutions and supplying them to global automakers. LG stated, "These solutions can easily integrate with newly emerging vehicle infotainment systems," and predicted, "They will enhance safety by preventing driver errors, which are the leading cause of traffic accidents and loss of life."
Since Chairman Koo Kwang-mo’s inauguration in 2018, LG has positioned digital transformation as the company’s growth engine and has been strengthening investments focused on future businesses such as AI, autonomous driving, and content.
Last month, the electric vehicle powertrain joint venture established by LG Electronics and Magna International, the world’s third-largest automotive parts supplier, officially launched. In March, LG also established 'Aluto,' a vehicle infotainment joint venture with Swiss software company Luxoft. In 2018, LG acquired ZKW, a premium automotive headlamp manufacturer.
LG has also put effort into collaborating with or acquiring domestic and international companies possessing autonomous driving and AI-related technologies. Notably, in 2018, LG Electronics invested about 4.5 billion KRW in the U.S. vehicle AI sensor startup 'AI,' agreeing on technology collaboration, and the following year, it supported 3.5 billion KRW to collaborate with the domestic mobility service platform startup 'Code42.' Over the past three years, LG Electronics has invested over 10 billion KRW in key companies in the autonomous driving mobility sector in the U.S. and Israel.
