[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The UK will begin administering COVID-19 booster shots next month to 32 million adults aged 50 and over and immunocompromised individuals.
The Telegraph reported on the 1st (local time) that "the government plans to deliver 2.5 million doses to 2,000 pharmacies during the first week of vaccinations starting on the 6th of next month."
The UK government is considering using a different vaccine for the booster shot than the one used for the first and second doses, based on research suggesting that mixed vaccinations may be more effective. The Telegraph stated, "The use of the AstraZeneca vaccine for booster shots will significantly decrease."
The UK government aims to start booster vaccinations in early September and complete them by early December. The plan is to finish the final booster shots at least two weeks before Christmas so that the vaccine's effectiveness can be realized during the holiday season.
To meet the early December deadline for completing booster shots, the UK government is targeting approximately 2.46 million vaccinations per week. So far, 88% of adults in the UK have received their first dose, and 72% have completed their second dose.
