[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyung-min] Our women's fencing sabre team won the bronze medal for the first time in the Olympic team event.

The Korean women's sabre team, consisting of Kim Ji-yeon (33), Yoon Ji-su (28, both from Seoul Metropolitan Government), Choi Soo-yeon (31), and Seo Ji-yeon (28, both from Ansan City Hall), defeated Italy 45-42 in the bronze medal match of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics team event held at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan.

With this, Korean fencing won its first medal in the Olympic women's sabre team event. The women's sabre team event was introduced to the Olympics at the 2008 Beijing Games, was excluded due to event rotation at the 2012 London Games, and was held again at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games and this time.

Korea did not participate in the Beijing Games, and in Rio, Kim Ji-yeon, Seo Ji-yeon, Yoon Ji-su, and Hwang Sun-ah competed, finishing 5th after losing to Ukraine in the quarterfinals. This time, they entered the medal zone for the first time.

With the bronze medal in women's sabre, our fencing team achieved medals in four team events at this Tokyo Olympics. Previously, there was a gold medal in men's sabre, a silver medal in women's ?p?e, and a bronze medal in men's ?p?e. The men's and women's foil teams did not qualify for the team events.
