Choi Woon-jung Chases from 2nd Place, 3 Strokes Behind: "Two Days Left"... Tolly Leads

Choi Woon-jung Chases from 2nd Place, 3 Strokes Behind: "Two Days Left"... Tolly Leads

[Asia Economy Golf Specialist Reporter Kim Hyun-jun] Choi Woon-jung (31, Volvik, photo) continues her march toward victory.

On the 31st (Korean time), at the Muirfield Golf Club in Ballymena, Northern Ireland (par 72), the second day of the LPGA Tour ISPS Handa World Invitational (total prize money $1.5 million) concluded with Choi posting a 3-under-par round, placing her in a tie for 2nd place (10-under-par 135 strokes). The first and second rounds are played alternating between Galgorm Castle (par 73) and Muirfield, with the third and fourth rounds returning to Galgorm Castle for the final showdown. Emma Talley leads by 3 strokes (13-under-par 132 strokes), with Jennifer Kupcho (both from the USA) joining Choi in a tie for 2nd place.

Choi recorded 4 birdies and 1 bogey. She started strong with a birdie on the first hole she played, the 10th hole (par 4), followed by birdies on the 16th hole (par 5) and the back nine’s 1st hole (par 4). Her only bogey came on the 2nd hole (par 4), but she recovered with a birdie on the final 9th hole (par 4). Her green in regulation rate was an impressive 83.33% for two consecutive days, showcasing her pinpoint iron shots. However, her putting count rose to 29, which was a disappointment as it prevented her from lowering her score further. This marks a great opportunity for her to claim her second career win after a six-year gap since the Marathon Classic in July 2015. She expressed confidence, saying, "Considering the unfamiliar course, this is sufficient."

Charlie Hull (England) joined the battle for the title, tied for 4th place (9-under-par 136 strokes). Hull was selected for the England team at the Tokyo Olympics but gave up her spot due to COVID-19 concerns and is now competing in this tournament. From Korea, Kwak Min-seo (31) added a 3-under-par round at Galgorm Castle, placing 6th (8-under-par 137 strokes). However, the top favorite for the win, Lee Jeong-eun 6 (25, Daebang Construction), was cut after posting 1-over-par at Galgorm Castle on the first day and even par at Muirfield on the second day, remaining stagnant in the standings.
