[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Jo] The Ministry of Justice will hold a parole review committee meeting at the Government Gwacheon Complex on the 9th of next month to review the parole candidates for August 15. It is reported that Lee Jae-yong, Vice Chairman of Samsung Electronics, is also included among the candidates for review.
The Ministry of Justice has so far granted parole to inmates who have served more than 80% of their sentence in practice, but recently relaxed the parole review criteria. Vice Chairman Lee met the preliminary parole review criteria by serving 60% of his sentence after his prison term was confirmed in January this year for the state affairs manipulation case. If the parole review committee decides that Vice Chairman Lee is eligible for parole, it is expected that parole will be executed on the 13th of next month after final approval by Minister of Justice Park Beom-gye.
The parole review committee consists of three internal members: Kang Sung-guk, Vice Minister of Justice (Chairman), Koo Ja-hyun, Director of the Prosecutor's Office, and Yoo Byung-chul, Director of the Correction Headquarters; and five external members: Yoon Kang-yeol, Chief Judge of Seoul High Court, Kim Yong-jin, Lawyer at the Korea Legal Aid Corporation, Hong Seung-hee, Professor at Wonkwang University Law School, Baek Yong-mae, Professor of Psychology at Catholic University, and Cho Yoon-oh, Professor at Dongguk University Police and Judicial College.
