[Mokpo＝Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Kidong] Mokpo Fisheries Cooperative announced on the 30th that it held three meetings with shipowner organizations and private ice-making companies to ensure there are no disruptions in ice supply for fishing vessels during this year's fishing season (August to November), following last autumn's ice supply shortage caused by a bumper harvest of yellow croaker.
At these meetings, Mokpo Fisheries Cooperative, Mokpo City Fisheries Promotion Division, representatives of ice-making companies, and shipowner associations by industry devised measures to prevent ice supply problems during this year's peak fishing season.
Mokpo Fisheries Cooperative decided to produce and stockpile 12,500 blocks of ice before the peak season to prepare for any shortages, and local ice-making companies (Geochang Ice, Shinyoung Ice) committed to expanding production facilities (600 blocks per day) by the end of July to ensure there will be no ice supply shortages like last year.
Additionally, with active support from Mokpo City, the narrowness of the North Port fresh fish auction market operated by Mokpo Fisheries Cooperative is being addressed through a cold auction market project. As a long-term solution to ice shortages, a seafood logistics distribution facility (second ice-making, freezing, and refrigeration warehouse) project has been approved and is underway. By establishing the cold auction market, it will become a hygienic and safe auction market in name and reality.
