[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Ji-eun] Kim Jong-un, General Secretary of North Korea, presided over the first-ever comprehensive training session for all military commanders and political workers (cadres) and ordered the strengthening of military power, but made no mention of nuclear forces.
Korean Central News Agency reported on the 30th, "Under the leadership of Comrade Kim Jong-un, the 1st training session for commanders and political workers of the Korean People's Army was held in Pyongyang from July 24 to 27."
General Secretary Kim said, "The current situation, where hostile forces are intensifying fanatical and persistent various invasion war exercises, continuously and systematically expanding their capability to launch preemptive strikes against our country, and increasing military armaments, further ignites the determination and fighting spirit of our army to fundamentally end the vicious cycle of escalating tensions."
However, he did not mention the strengthening of nuclear forces. At the National Veterans' Meeting held on the 27th, General Secretary Kim also emphasized internal unity without mentioning nuclear deterrence.
General Secretary Kim emphasized, "It is important that soldiers mobilized for socialist construction hold pride and confidence as creators for the happiness of the people, sentinels protecting the people's trust in the Party, and cornerstone stones building the fortress of unity," adding, "They must protect the lives and property of the people at the cost of their lives."
The news agency explained the background of holding this training session as "to further enhance the military-political might and revolutionary fighting spirit of the Korean People's Army, and to reintroduce and internalize the Party Central Committee’s important military strategic and tactical ideas and the directions and policies for military construction that meet the demands of the changed situation among military political cadres."
The training session was attended by military commanders and political commissars from various branches, corps, divisions, brigades, and regiments of the Korean People's Army, members of the People's Army Party Committee Executive Committee, and officials from the General Political Bureau, General Staff Department, and Ministry of National Defense.
