[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Haeyoung] The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries announced on the 30th that fishermen voluntarily removed 274 tons of illegal fishing gear, including non-standard coastal traps, installed around Deukryangman Bay in Jeollanam-do.
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, upon continuous discovery of octopus traps violating mesh size and usage regulations along the coasts of Jangheung, Boseong, and Goheung in Jeollanam-do, led negotiations with local fishermen for voluntary removal before proceeding with forced removal. The 274 tons of traps collected this time were in accordance with this agreement.
However, as some fishermen failed to comply with the agreement, collecting less than half of the initially agreed amount, the Ministry plans to conduct joint crackdowns with related agencies.
