Meeting with Experts from Related Agencies
[Asia Economy Reporter Minyoung Cha] Yong Hong-taek, 1st Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and ICT, announced on the 29th that he held a meeting with experts from related organizations to review follow-up measures in the advanced technology sector, which was a major achievement of the Korea-US summit.
At this meeting, the current status of cooperation in emerging technologies such as space, 6G (next-generation mobile communication network), Open RAN, and quantum technology, as well as STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields, which were agreed upon by both countries at the Korea-US summit, was presented by each sector, and follow-up plans were discussed.
In the space sector, the two countries have completed cooperation agreements such as the "Additional Participation in the Artemis Accords" and the "Korea-US Joint Statement on Satellite Navigation" in May. Last month, the "3rd Basic Plan for Space Development Promotion Revision (draft)" reflecting the summit outcomes was also reviewed and approved.
Cooperation in emerging technology fields such as biotechnology, 6G, Open RAN, and quantum technology is also continuing. A new project supporting the expansion of professional personnel exchanges between countries has been established to promote workforce development and technology acquisition in new industry sectors.
Participants from related organizations requested continuous policy support from the government, stating that Korea-US advanced technology cooperation is a good opportunity to strengthen Korea's competitiveness centered on advanced technology fields in preparation for the era of technological hegemony competition.
Vice Minister Yong Hong-taek said, "As cooperation in science and technology between Korea and the US expands into a technological alliance, cooperation in advanced technology fields is important," and added, "The tangible results of cooperation come from the private sector, so I ask for institutional cooperation."
